CVEC School Program

In order to educate its youngest members in safe, responsible energy practices, Central Virginia Electric Cooperative offers an in-school program about electricity and electrical safety. This program aligns with Virginia’s science SOLs for 3rd and 4th grade and incorporates activities which emphasize exploration, experimentation, critical thinking, reading, writing, and math skills.  The program includes three components: teacher lesson plans, the Circuit Display Lab, and a Live Line Demonstration.

Teacher Lesson Plans

Each lesson address SOLs from the 3rd or 4th grade electrical energy units. The lesson plans include teacher answer guides, activity sheets, instructions for experimentation, and reading, writing, and math activities that promote cross-curricular engagement. Live Line Demonstration

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative is eager to present our Live Line Safety Demonstration to the schools in CVEC’s service area. The five-foot Live Line model town features Neon Leon and Lightning Liz, two figurines made of electrical fuses which illuminate when they come in contact with the hazards surrounding them. Trained CVEC line technicians operate the Live Line, teaching students about their safety equipment, demonstrating the dangers of electrical wires and power lines, and answering students’ questions about electricity and CVEC.

Appointments for the Live Line demonstrations are limited, scheduled on a first-come-first-serve basis, and must be booked at least three weeks in advance. To schedule a demonstration,
contact Ginny Tyree at [email protected] or call 800-367-2832, extension 1501.

We'll keep you posted when these programs are finalized.

Circuit Display Lab

The Circuit Display Lab will offer students the opportunity to create different types of circuits and interact with the energy transformation process. The lab includes batteries and a generator, lights, a noisemaker, a fan and motor, a capacitor, a fuse, and a resistor, switches, and series and parallel circuits. All of the lab components are mounted to a display board, and interactive pieces invite students to connect the components to different power sources and discover energy transformations and principles of electricity. The lab also includes a voltmeter which students may use to measure classroom energy use.
